A hand-held device called Cellfina was approved in 2015 to make this procedure more precise. It provides vacuum-assisted control of the depth and area treated. About 20 to 30 individual cellulite dimples are treated during an average 1-hour session. Results can last up to 2 years.
Some over-the-counter cellulite products may claim to help remove impurities and toxins from the body. But neither their efficacy nor their claims about what causes cellulite are supported by science. Rather, cellulite occurs when underlying fat deposits begin to push through layers of collagen fibers, or connective tissue, under the skin (often in the buttocks and thigh areas, but also on arms, stomachs, and other common trouble spots, as well).
Kelp. Kelp has many benefits and is a very low cost nutrient. It contains a compound called “fucoxanthin,” which is found in chlorophyll bearing green plants. Cellulite involves fat, because bulging fat cells are part of the equation, but it’s really the connective fibers between your skin and muscle that create the lumpy, dimpling effect. “Collagen fiber strands that attach skin to muscle are creating the pockets of skin,” says Jennifer Lucas, M.D., dermatologist at Cleveland Clinic. “What you’re seeing is normal fat that everyone has. Why you’re seeing it, is because there are areas that are being pulled down.”

It’s true that exercise can have some effect on cellulite, but it’s definitely not a cure-all. “Daily exercise will help, but only when it focuses on building muscle,” Dr. Lolis says. That means cardio is *not* the cellulite solution it was once touted to be. “Most women notice cellulite on their thighs and buttocks, so squats, lunges, and even things like Zumba, Barre Motion, exercise bands, and resistance training will help.” Still, she’s careful to point out that working out isn’t a guaranteed way to get rid of the stuff.
Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT) is also known as Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT). The technology is best known for breaking up kidney stones. In that application, ESWT uses highly focused shock waves to break apart the kidney stones so that they can easily pass. AWT uses lower energy, unfocused shock waves to impact the contracted pillars that cause dimpling (see: Why do I have cellulite? above). This causes the dimples to release and helps to smooth the skin. The body also responds by making new collagen that helps strengthen the barrier at the lower dermis and decreases fat eruption (see: Why do I have cellulite? above). This combination is effective in improving the appearance of cellulite. At least three studies have shown that AWT is effective and has no significant side effects.
